SMOOTH & CONSISTENT

Why Coil?

Air springs have improved substantially over the years - and we've been at the forefront of air spring development for years, so we've got no bridges to sell you. Yeah, coils are heavier than air, and for some riders that alone is a dealbreaker - fair enough. The advantages of coil springs, however, are clear:

  • Zero stiction or friction in a coil spring. And no moving seals in the spring system to wear out, cause friction or leak.
  • Zero spring rate variation allowing more mid-stroke support and consistency.
  • More oil in the fork - lubrication and service life are improved.
  • In short, improvements in sensitivity, grip, compliance, mid-stroke support and consistency, with reductions in harshness and hand pain.

BOTTOM OUT RESISTANCE

Externally Adjustable Hydraulics

Low weight aside, air springs outperform coil springs in one critical area: bottoming resistance. The hydraulic bottoming control valve addresses this with a speed sensitive shimmed valve which engages progressively and seamlessly in the last 50mm of travel, bringing the fork to a smooth and controlled stop at the end of the travel. High energy and low energy inputs are effectively managed without harshness. Easy tool-free external adjustment ensures you get as much or as little bottoming resistance as you need at the turn of a dial. Increased stability as energy is dissipated, rather than stored and thrown back at you.

FAQ

How much weight does it add?
It's heavier than your air spring by between 250-450g, depending on spring rate (firmer springs are generally heavier) and the fork's original spring system. If the weight bothers you, you may be more interested in a Luftkappe or Secus.

Can I convert my fork back to air afterwards?
It depends, on some forks like Ohlins or the F38 that doesn't use the ID of the stanchion as sealing surface, then yes, possibly. There is a risk that spring rub may score the inside of your stanchion, so the the air piston may not seal again. The spring is both isolated and guided to minimise stanchion knock and rub, however we cannot guarantee an air spring will seal again after riding with a spring installed. We'd be pretty surprised if anyone actually wanted to do this after riding the Smashpot though.

Does it void the fork's warranty?
As with any aftermarket modifications, it should be expected to void the fork manufacturer's warranty.

Do I need any extra parts to change the travel?
All spacers required are included with the kit. The only thing you may want is more heat shrink for the cartridge tube, as it's installed after travel is set internally. CLICK HERE FOR SPARE PARTS.

Typical fork maximum permissible travels:
These change year by year across year models (for example, Lyriks from 2016-2022 were 180mm max, but from 2023+ they are 160mm max). Check with your fork's manufacturer regarding the maximum travel of your fork - if in doubt, don't exceed what your existing fork is currently set to.

I'm changing travel and I want to source heat shrink myself. What size do I need?

Spring:
2:1 singlewall polyolefin non-adhesive, with an initial (non-shrunk) diameter of 1.25' (32mm). 1.5' (38mm) initial diameter will also work.

Outer tube:
2:1 singlewall polyolefin non-adhesive, with an intital (non-shrunk) diameter of 3/4' (19.1mm)

INSTALLATION & MANUAL

WARNING: VORSPRUNG products should be installed and serviced by a trained bicycle service technician, in accordance with both VORSPRUNG and original manufacturers' specifications. If you have any doubt whether or not you can properly service your suspension product, or you have not performed this kind of work before, then please DO NOT attempt it. Improperly serviced products can fail, causing the rider to lose control resulting in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. That's not a joke. Don't mess around with it if you don't know what you're doing, because the best case scenario is usually that you damage something in the process. Do not perform any kind of service on your suspension whilst drunk, high or stupid. We accept no responsibility nor liability for component damage or failure of any description in the case of self-installed units.

SPRING RATE ADVICE

Note:

  • E-bikes - Add 15lbs / 7kg to total rider weight.
  • Rockshox Zeb / Fox 38 - Riders should drop their spring rate by 5lbs/in
  • 65lbs/in or higher spring rates should consider a revalve to ensure their rebound damping is adequate to cope with the spring force. Audible topout may otherwise occur. 
  • Cells marked in blue are where a 70lbs/in spring would ideally be used but cannot due to limited max travel
  • 75lbs/in and 70lbs/in springs can be run at up to 160mm but no higher.
  • 80lbs/in springs can be run at up to 150mm but no higher.

Delivery

For spare parts, if they are in stock we will send them out the same day if we receive the order before midday (except weekends). If we receive the order after midday, we will do our best to despatch them same day, but it may be the following working day. Orders placed after 3pm on Friday will be despatched on the following Monday. We normally send spare parts by Royal Mail post (see below or our 'Shipping' page for cost/delivery times).

Forks, shocks and large/heavy orders go by courier. UK deliveries are with DPD Local, for overseas customers it's DPD, FedEx or DHL.  In all cases these are fully tracked services and you'll need to sign for the delivery - please provide a suitable address with extra instructions if necessary.

Returns

You may return your order unused, within 14 days for a refund if you no longer require it, provided it is returned with its original undamaged packaging and is unused and unmarked. Please note, we do not refund postage unless items were supplied in error or are faulty.

Picking mistakes do sometime happen. If we supply the wrong part or there are parts missing from your order please let us know within 14 days of receipt so that we can correct the mistake. In the case of picking errors we will refund your postage costs on the returned item.

Faulty goods will be replaced with the same item or a suitable equivalent, as appropriate.

TF Tuned cannot be held responsible for the non-receipt of returned goods so please ensure you use a tracked and/or insured service as appropriate to the value of the goods you are returning.

"Totally Smashing! Went for the 160mm Set-up with a 40lb spring in my 1 yr old Domain. As recommended by TFTuned & the Vorsprung fitting guide we went for a soft setting and it's spot on, the bike even climbs better as I had started to feel the bike stalling on tech climbs but it now sits at a smidge below 30% sag and the suppleness has improved small bump sensitivity no end, mid stroke is fine, the fork holds up on the steeps and the hydraulic bottom out stops a harsh end stop and most importantly the fork plows through the high speed rough stuff. Exactly what it says on the tin and with the helpful discussion from TFTuned it's right straight out of the box, thanks guys!"

"Plush. Supportive. Game changer! So I plumped got the Smashpot after previously trying a luftkappe, and although that was an improvement over the fox 38, I could never find a setup I liked. However, the coil is a different league. So smooth off the top, loads more support, just gobbles up the rough trails with aplomb. How I always wanted a fork to be. Just be warned - you’ll be charging down your trails way faster than normal - and more quietly!! Usual top service from TF for fitting etc. too. :-)"

"After having the Whyte E-150 for almost a year and never really being happy with the way the Zeb forks rode chop ((and I’ve played around with air pressure, tokens, damper settings, oil weight and even revalved the compression stack (we build race car dampers so have all the kit including a dyno)), I gave up and ordered a smashpot coil conversion kit last week. One ride in the Peak District and I can tell you it’s so much better at repeated hits of fist sized rocks and steps that you wouldn’t think it was the same fork! BPW next month will test them to the max!"

"So took the Smashpot to its first proper nadge testing at off piste cannock. There is no comparison to an air fork (replaced air sprung Lyric) is there...the coil blows air forks into weeds. Wish I'd swapped back to coils years ago. The Smashpot oil damper thingy works really well - end of day I found I'd used all the travel but I had not noticed! Brilliant product. Trouble is, all my mates will want one now that they have seen how good it is!!"

"Fitted to a 170 mm float on a steel framed hardtail. I have used the system now on a good number of rides over a few months, ranging from fast jumpy trails to steep muddy enduro. As I had hoped, butter smooth, silky and a real pleasure over fast chatter inducing roots and ruts. No more numb hands. I was midway between 2 springs, and chose the softer. I could have gone even softer, because I have the leg valve fully open, and still have not used up all the travel. I guess i am becoming a bit of a wuss in my old age, certainly not hitting properly menacing drops any more. I suggest that if you aren't still hitting massive downhill style features then go for the bottom or, at most, middle grading for rider level. So saying, the fork felt lovely on fast, steep Scottish enduro trails, and gave immense grip and confidence on sections that are effectively like a cross between river beds and giant staircases. I have always loved coil springs. The new style, with various types of bottom out system, have certainly added to the sport. The smashpot was easy to fit, took about an hour, working slowly and carefully. Instructions were good from their website, just took a while to figure how to torque up via a cone spanner. I made an adaptor with neutral mechanical leverage. I could probably just have done it freehand, by feel, but I like to do things properly. It might help if they added a photo in their pdf, and some text explaining which tools and approaches work for this. Lots of crap advice on the internet on this type of thing, with people not understanding basic physics. Overall, I would buy again, totally lively, have raised my pleasure levels on every ride, boosted my descent times, and reduced fatigue. Night and day..."

"I was never too happy with the plushness of my Fox 36 Performance, compared to my Lyrik. Considering the upgrade alternatives (Zeb, 38, Boxxer), I thought it would be worth trying the Smashpot first. I have to say I'm absolutely amazed, it has transformed this product off the scale, and doesn't even resemble the feel of the original fork. The feeling of loading the front end up through rough corners knowing that it will hang on is addictive. The bottom out performance is sensational too - I was never very happy using air volume spacers to help bottom out, because it stores a lot of energy in your fork which you would prefer to dissipate. The fork is much more fun than it was before. I'm really surprised that the online reviews don't articulate how transformative this product is. Needless to say I'm delighted by this product and the great service from TF tuned. This is a great value alternative to upgrading to more expensive forks which probably don't perform as well as the Fox36 + Smashpot. Just to help others, I'm 70kg, on the 40lb/in 170mm. It's super plush, but doesn't bottom out (when compared to 65psi & 2 volume spacer in my Fox 36 which did bottom out on the same landings). I would be curious to try the 45lb/in spring, as the 40lb/in feels so supple, but I'm not bottoming, so I'll stick with what I've got for now."

"Worth every penny. I have it installed in my both forks - Fox 36 GRIP2 and Lyrik RC2. Compared to air spring much improved sensitivity in small bumps, no any problems with mis travel suport. Even in very wet and slippery condition traction improved and surprisingly good. The only disadvantage is the sacrifice of few grams which you completely don't feel during the ride but visible on the balance...be careful with spring rate as for me you can go below the official table recomendation, of course depends on your trails. As usual perfect advice and delivery time from TFtuned"

"OMG Wow!!! Installed this on my 2020 Commencal Metapower SX which has a coil rear shock , to say I am blown away is an understatement, the control in wet steep rooty slippery trails is sublime, now the front matches the rear in feel, i honestly didn't think the 2020 Lyrik could feel better but boy was I wrong , I'll be slapping one on my Nomad 4 as well . Buy and never look at air again."

"My Fox 36 float were not good on small bumps, and soft on mid stroke even with tokens. So i was going to go with the negative air conversion but figured if the coil was a good as the old Van set up it would be worth it. Well it's better all the small bump and you can run a med/soft sprint and not bottom out it also give you great mid stroke support. It feels like a DH bike now and smashes through we roots like its dry. you would never notice the extra 300g. I weight 102kg in gear but i found the 60lbs spring too hard to went for the 55lbs. I think the spring chart is set for steep dry with a pro riding as they are very hard, so go for the softer spring. Good instructions to fit yourself. Really happy with the set up. Way better than air. "
